When you’re the one holding everything together

You’re the one people rely on. You keep things going, take care of what needs to be done, and stay strong, because someone has to.

But somewhere along the way, you may have stopped asking yourself how you’re actually doing.

Caregiver burnout doesn’t always look like falling apart. Sometimes, it looks like continuing on… while quietly feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotionally numb.

What caregiver burnout can feel like

Caregiver burnout is more common than many people realize, especially among parents, partners, and those supporting loved ones through medical or emotional challenges.

You might notice:

  • Feeling constantly tired, even after rest

  • A sense of emotional heaviness or numbness

  • Guilt when taking time for yourself

  • Irritability or feeling more easily overwhelmed

  • A quiet thought of “I can’t keep doing this like this”

If any part of this resonates, you’re not alone.

Why it’s so hard to ask for help

Many caregivers don’t reach out, not because they don’t need support, but because it feels complicated to do so.

You may feel:

  • “Others have it worse, I should be grateful”

  • “This is my responsibility”

  • “I just need to be stronger”

Over time, your role can become part of your identity. And asking for help can feel unfamiliar, or even uncomfortable.

Support doesn’t mean you’re failing

Reaching a point of exhaustion doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong. It often means you’ve been carrying a lot, for a long time.

Counselling offers a space where you don’t have to hold everything together.

Through counselling, you can begin to:

  • Process the emotional weight you’ve been carrying

  • Make space for your own needs without guilt

  • Find a more sustainable way of continuing to care, for others and for yourself
