When life feels overwhelming, finding someone who truly understands your background and lived experience can make all the difference.
I’m Jessy Lok, a Registered Clinical Counsellor based in Vancouver & Richmond in British Columbia. I offer a warm, collaborative space where you can slow down, be heard, and gently make sense of what you’re going through, at your own pace.

My approach is rooted in respect, cultural awareness, and deep listening. Together, we explore not just what is happening on the surface, but also the layers of meaning shaped by your history, relationships, and identity. From there, we begin to find a way forward that feels authentic and sustainable.
What It Means to Be a Culturally Attuned Counsellor
Being culturally informed goes beyond understanding different cultures at a surface level.
It means being genuinely curious about your story, how your cultural background, family values, and environment have shaped the way you see yourself and the world. It also means recognizing that healing does not look the same for everyone.
In our work together, I aim to create a space where you don’t have to explain or justify your experience to be understood.
This may include:
Exploring your cultural values, traditions, and beliefs
Respecting your preferred language and communication style
Understanding the impact of migration, identity, or intergenerational dynamics
Acknowledging experiences of racism, marginalization, or cultural tension
Inviting family or relational context into the work when it feels helpful
This is not just about addressing challenges, it’s about honouring your whole self.
How Cultural Awareness Supports Deeper Healing
You are not just a set of symptoms to be managed.
You are a whole person shaped by your experiences, relationships, and environment. When these parts are acknowledged, therapy becomes more meaningful, and often more effective.
For example, if you come from a background where mental health is rarely discussed, it can feel difficult to even begin. Rather than pushing against that, we can gently explore it together, finding ways to care for your emotional wellbeing while still respecting your cultural context.
In practice, this might look like:
Using metaphors or perspectives that resonate with your lived experience
Integrating personal, cultural, or spiritual values into the process
Being mindful of family roles, expectations, and responsibilities
Moving at a pace that feels safe and respectful to you
Healing doesn’t require you to abandon where you come from. It can begin right there.
Language, Nuance, and Feeling Understood
Language carries more than meaning, it carries emotion, identity, and subtle nuance.
If English isn’t the language you feel most comfortable expressing yourself in, or if certain feelings are easier to describe in another language, you are welcome to bring that into our work.
Even small shifts in tone or phrasing can change how safe it feels to share something vulnerable. I pay attention to these details, and I check in regularly to make sure you feel understood, not just heard.
You are always welcome to ask questions, clarify, or share feedback. Therapy works best when it feels like a collaborative process.
Supporting Individuals, Families, and Youth
Each person’s situation is unique, and counselling is never one-size-fits-all.
I work with:
Individuals
Navigating anxiety, stress, or life transitions
Processing past experiences or emotional overwhelm
Seeking clarity, grounding, or inner stability
Families & Caregivers
Managing relational stress and communication challenges
Balancing cultural expectations and personal needs
Supporting children while also caring for yourself
Children & Youth
Exploring identity, belonging, and emotional expression
Building coping skills in a safe and supportive space
Some examples of how this may look in practice:
Supporting a parent navigating differences in cultural values within the family
Holding space for a young person exploring identity in a multicultural environment
Walking alongside someone processing grief while honouring cultural or spiritual practices
The goal is not to “fix” you, but to support you in reconnecting with your own capacity for
clarity, resilience, and care.
A Space That Feels Safe, Gentle, and Accessible
Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, especially when past experiences have felt invalidating or misunderstood.
My intention is to offer a space that feels:
Warm and non-judgmental
Culturally respectful and aware
Flexible and accessible across British Columbia (virtual sessions available)
Grounded, steady, and at your pace
You don’t have to have everything figured out before starting. You can come as you are.
